Third Friday Tours at the Octagon Earthwork with Brad Lepper
Guided monthly archaeology tours of Newark's Octagon Earthwork with a senior archaeologist.
Join archaeologist Brad Lepper for a monthly guided exploration of the Octagon Earthwork, one of Ohio's most remarkable historical sites. During these Third Friday tours, you'll learn about the impressive geometric precision and engineering that Indigenous peoples of the Hopewell Cultural Period achieved here. Brad will help your family understand the deeper significance of this sacred location—how it connected to the earth, sky, and water, and why it served as an important gathering place for celebration and ceremony.
The tour is completely free and runs rain or shine from March through November. Simply arrive at the Octagon Visitor Center by 2 p.m. on the tour date, and the group will depart from the front entrance. This is a wonderful opportunity for families interested in Native American history and archaeology to explore an authentic earthwork and gain insight into Ohio's rich Indigenous heritage. While admission is free, donations are welcome to support the site's educational programs.
