Octagon Homeschool Days

Drop-in homeschool programs exploring Ohio history and archaeology at Octagon Earthworks.

Looking for a way to bring Ohio history to life? The Octagon Earthworks hosts a drop-in homeschool program on the fourth Friday of each month, designed for students ages 5–12. Each session explores a different aspect of the ancient Hopewell Culture through hands-on activities and guided tours of the earthworks. June's program focuses on astronomy, investigating how the Hopewell people aligned the Octagon with celestial events. Other months feature lessons on construction techniques, ancient pottery, and native Ohio trees—with most programs including a take-home project students create themselves. Sessions run from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., and admission is $8 per participant. No advance registration is needed; just drop in. Depending on the month's focus, you may explore outdoor grounds (so dress for weather and wear sturdy shoes), create pottery, build earthwork models, or keep a nature journal. Programs blend learning with creative, tactile activities that help kids understand how people lived and built over 2,000 years ago.
