Kitchen Blueprint: A Basics for Independent Living

Kitchen Blueprint: A Basics for Independent Living

Independent living skills workshop for teens at Philip Heit Center.

Does your teen or young adult head off to college or their own place soon? This four-session cooking series helps them go from just getting by in the kitchen to actually enjoying it. Taught by Christina Allen of Food Leads, the classes combine practical cooking techniques with real nutrition knowledge—perfect for students juggling busy schedules. You'll learn how to read nutrition labels, master one-pan meals with bold flavors on a budget, shop smartly whether you're in a dining hall or at the grocery store, and meal prep like a pro so nothing goes to waste. Each session builds on the last: starting with understanding what your body needs, moving through essential knife skills and heat control, then tackling grocery strategy, and finishing with speedy assembly-style cooking. The class emphasizes local food and includes hands-on preparation of meals like Moroccan Chicken and grain bowls. Registration costs $240 for all four classes or $120 if you'd prefer just two sessions. Reach out to Healthy New Albany Programs at (614) 685-6344 to sign up.
