Intro to Drawing with Value, a Three-Part Class

This three-week drawing series introduces young artists to the fundamentals of creating depth and dimension through value—the range of light and dark in artwork. Each two-and-a-half-hour session builds on the last, moving from basic line techniques to working with charcoal. In the first class, students explore cross-hatching and learn how surface planes influence line direction. The second week shifts focus to recognizing shapes of value within still-life arrangements, using both charcoal and erasers for additive and subtractive effects. The final session brings everything together with a full value drawing of crumpled paper, emphasizing light and shadow. Classes meet weekly on Wednesday afternoons at the Floyd County Carnegie Library Cultural Arts Center. This is a wonderful opportunity for young artists to develop observational skills and gain confidence with fundamental drawing techniques. Best of all, the program is completely free, making it an accessible way for families to explore visual arts together.
