Independence Day – 1813

Independence Day – 1813

Free historical event at Ohio History Connection celebrating early American independence.

Step back in time with a patriotic celebration inspired by actual Independence Day festivities held at Fort Meigs during the War of 1812. Costumed staff and volunteers bring history to life as they recreate the traditions of that era. The centerpiece of the day is a dramatic eighteen-gun artillery salute—one shot for each of the states that made up the nation at that time—accompanied by period-appropriate toasts and songs. It's a memorable way for families to connect with Ohio's military heritage and learn about an important chapter in American history. Beyond the impressive cannon fire, the day offers plenty to explore and enjoy. Visitors can take guided history tours to deepen their understanding of the fort's significance, and kids might especially enjoy competing in musket competitions alongside other young visitors. The site is open from noon until 5 p.m., giving families flexibility in planning their visit. Admission is affordable, with rates for adults, seniors, and students; Ohio History Connection members enter free. Whether your family loves history, enjoys outdoor celebrations, or wants to try something different this Independence Day, this event blends education with interactive fun.
