Harvest Gathering of the Crops

Hands-on historic food prep demonstrations — make hominy, preserve beans, grind corn at Ohio History Connection.

Step back in time and discover how people once prepared and preserved their food. Staff members will lead hands-on demonstrations throughout the afternoon, showing visitors traditional techniques like making hominy, stringing beans, and grinding corn into cornmeal. This is a casual, drop-in event—families can arrive anytime during the four-hour window and participate at their own pace in the museum garden. This event works wonderfully for curious kids and adults interested in Ohio's history and heritage. Admission is affordable, with children five and under getting in free, and Ohio History Connection members also receive complimentary entry. Whether your family wants to spend an hour or explore the entire afternoon, there's flexibility to enjoy the demonstrations and learn practical skills our ancestors relied on.
