Double Wall Basket Weaving Workshop

Double Wall Basket Weaving Workshop

Learn traditional basket weaving at Octagon Earthworks.

Learn an authentic Cherokee weaving technique in this hands-on cultural workshop led by Renata Cauthon, a Cherokee artist and enrolled citizen of the Cherokee Nation. You'll discover the fundamentals of double-wall basket construction—a method that creates two walls woven simultaneously to produce a strong, seamless basket with visual depth. The workshop provides everything you need: pre-soaked and hand-dyed reed, core materials, and step-by-step guidance through proper starts, shaping, tension control, and how the inner and outer walls work together as one structure. This experience welcomes beginners and experienced weavers alike, emphasizing mindfulness, intentional making, and respect for materials. Each basket becomes a one-of-a-kind creation with both function and story. With proper supervision, older children and teens can participate, making this a wonderful intergenerational activity. Two sessions are available (morning and afternoon), and all materials are included in your registration fee. Ohio History Connection members pay $130, while nonmembers pay $140.
